Smart Transcode

Upgrade

Use the same download URL as the first time: the file name smart-transcode-latest.tar.gz always holds the newest release.

Linux service

wget https://transcode.aarondyck.ca/downloads/smart-transcode-latest.tar.gz
tar xzf smart-transcode-latest.tar.gz
cd smart-transcode
sudo ./upgrade.sh
  • Asks nothing, and keeps the account (same UID / GID), the port, your settings and your database.
  • Saves the old program to /var/backups/smart-transcode/ and snapshots the database first (the five newest are kept).
  • If the new version does not start, the old one is put back automatically.
  • By hand: sudo ./upgrade.sh --rollback smart-transcode-1.0-<time>.tar.gz

Docker / Podman

docker compose pull && docker compose up -d # Podman: podman pull docker.io/aarondyck/smart-transcode:latest, then restart

Your database lives in the config folder, so it survives. To stay on one release, use a version tag (aarondyck/smart-transcode:1.0) instead of latest.

Moving from the Linux service to a container

sudo systemctl stop smart-transcode
sudo cp -a /var/lib/smart-transcode/. ./config/
sudo chown -R 1000:1000 ./config # = your PUID:PGID

Set PUID / PGID to the user the service ran as (id transcode), mount the media at the same paths as before, and start the container. History, settings, users and root folders carry over.
