Troubleshooting
The commands to run, and where to look, depend on how Smart Transcode is installed. Choose your platform.
🖥Bare metal
The Linux service (install.sh): systemd, journalctl, the installed ffmpeg and file permissions.
🐳Docker
The container: docker logs, PUID / PGID, GPU passthrough and compose.
🦭Podman
Rootless and rootful: user namespaces, SELinux, CDI GPUs and Quadlet.
Not sure which you use?
| Run | If it shows Smart Transcode |
|---|---|
systemctl status smart-transcode | You use the Linux service. |
docker ps | You use Docker. |
podman ps (as your user) or sudo podman ps | You use Podman. |
Problems that are the same everywhere
- A conversion failed. Open History, click the status of the file: the details show every attempt, ffmpeg's exit code and its last messages, and the exact ffmpeg command (copy it and try it by hand).
- A file was skipped. The History status says why (efficient, larger, in use, hard-linked…). Status meanings.
- The page is slow or shows “The server is slow to answer”. Settings → Debug → Server diagnostics shows what the server is busy with. Debug settings.
- I forgot a password / I am locked out. Password management (commands for each platform).
- Permission denied, empty library, wrong file owner. User and group IDs: the guide and the checklist on it.
- Sonarr / Radarr cannot connect. Check the address is reachable from this app (not
localhostacross containers) and add a path mapping when the apps see the media under different paths. Integrations.
